Sean Payton: Bo Nix’s Calm Demeanor Makes Him the Perfect Fit

Choosing Oregon quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft was a major move taken by the Denver Broncos. Nix’s appeal to Sean Payton, the new head coach, was evident as he outlined the reasons the seasoned quarterback is the perfect fit for his scheme.
“Bo is really intelligent. He quickly reads defenses and adjusts accordingly,” Payton said. “He plays with composure and effectiveness when he has the ball. Not just the little stuff, but even the elite NFL throws he makes demonstrate that.”
With 61 starts under his belt at Oregon and Auburn throughout his collegiate career, Nix is an asset to the Broncos. Due to his outstanding senior year (4,508 throwing yards, 45 touchdowns, and a 77.4% completion percentage), Denver found him to be an even more appealing prospect and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
Payton said that the build-up to the draft was stressful, particularly since Nix was the fifth quarterback selected overall, with Atlanta’s unexpected selection of Michael Penix Jr.
“I wanted to yell, ‘Shut up!’ whenever an analyst said that Bo Nix was a perfect fit for Denver.'” Payton chuckled, “We wanted to keep our interest under wraps. “We modify our attack depending on the player. Observe the transformation when Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, or Drew Brees were involved.”
Although Nix is the first rookie first-round pick that Payton will mentor, the quarterback room is not empty for Nix. Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson are still involved.
Nevertheless, the Broncos made a significant investment in Nix to get past the Russell Wilson era. Although Payton has a good history with quarterbacks, he doesn’t take anything for granted:
It’s evident that we need our quarterback to play well. However, a rushing game and a potent defense are what make a young quarterback successful. Your QB’s job becomes much more difficult if you are unable to accomplish it.”
