Jalen Brunson keeps changing the course of history. In a contentious opening game, the New York Knicks‘ standout guard scored 43 points to record his fourth straight 40+ outing, helping New York defeat the Indiana Pacers 121-117.

Brunson demonstrated his mastery in the fourth quarter once more. In the last minutes of the game, he scored 21 points with a persistent drive and clutch shooting. Even more astounding, Brunson’s six assists broke the previous NBA record for the most straight playoff performances with 40 points and five assists.

“It’s not just about the points,” stated Brunson. “The small things add up to our victory. What matters is that we fight every day.”

However, the Knicks’ victory was not without controversy. New York was significantly favored by two late-game calls:

  • The Kicked Ball That Wasn’t: Aaron Nesmith of Indiana was able to steal a potentially game-changing steal, but it was called a kicked ball, allowing the Knicks to maintain possession. Later on, referees acknowledged calling a blow.
  • Turner’s Moving Screen: Myles Turner was called for a close-moving screen with a few seconds remaining, which prevented an open shot. “We’re not expecting calls here,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle remarked, seeming to express his frustration.

Beyond the calls, the Pacers were punished by Brunson’s constant scoring. He dominated the match between the two elite point guards, Tyrese Haliburton of Indiana clearly having trouble offensively. Turner scored 23 points to lead the Pacers, but it was unable to overcome New York’s potent offensive arsenal.
