Javon Hargrave’s Potential Homecoming: Eagles’ Reunion Makes Sense

Although the Philadelphia Eagles recently made it to the Super Bowl, there may be some upheaval on their roster. Javon Hargrave, a defensive tackle, is one of the important players scheduled to enter free agency. For the last three seasons, Hargrave has been a powerhouse in the interior of the Eagles’ defensive line, thus his departure would be greatly missed. Nonetheless, there is a growing belief that Hargrave and the Eagles could benefit from a reunion.

The Effect of Hargrave in Philadelphia

Hargrave has made a name for himself as one of the NFL’s most disruptive defensive linemen since joining the Eagles in 2020. The Eagles’ defensive success has been largely attributed to his ability to create pressure up the middle. Hargrave has 18.5 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, and 37 quarterback hits in his three seasons in Philadelphia. In 2021, he was also selected to the Pro Bowl.

The Reasons for a Reunion

A reunion between Hargrave and the Eagles makes sense for several reasons. First, there is an obvious need a defensive tackle for the Eagles. They will have a big gap on their defensive line to cover if Hargrave leaves. Second, it has been stated that Hargrave wants to remain in Philadelphia. He has praised the organization, the city, and the supporters. Third, the Eagles can offer Hargrave a competitive price because they have the financial flexibility to do so.

Interest in the 49ers

Although the Eagles are the front-runners to keep Hargrave, other teams are also interested in his services. According to reports, the San Francisco 49ers are also a contender. Although their defense is excellent, the 49ers could use a defensive line upgrade. Hargrave would fit right in with their plan.

The Eagles’ Other Options

If the Eagles cannot re-sign Hargrave, they will need to explore other options at defensive tackle. There are several free agents available, including:

  • Fletcher Cox: Cox is a six-time Pro Bowler who has spent his entire career with the Eagles. However, he is getting up there in age (32) and his production has declined in recent years.
  • Javon Kinlaw: Kinlaw is a former first-round pick of the 49ers who has shown flashes of potential. However, he has been hampered by injuries.
  • Da’Ron Payne: Payne is a young, ascending player coming off a breakout season with the Washington Commanders. He would be a great addition to the Eagles’ defense.

The Eagles are facing some tough decisions this offseason. Re-signing Javon Hargrave should be one of their top priorities. However, they need to be prepared to move on if he decides to sign elsewhere. Other options are available, but Hargrave is the best fit for the Eagles’ defense.
