Dolphins Ground Game: A New Foundation for Success?

Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback, and a potent receiver corps have long been hallmarks of the Miami Dolphins‘ high-flying passing game. In South Florida, however, a philosophical change is taking place. Now, the Dolphins want to build a solid ground game as the cornerstone of their offensive strategy. This move is a result of the organization realizing how important a balanced assault is, particularly as they compete for a postseason berth in the fiercely contested AFC East.

Historically, Tagovailoa’s arm and the explosive playmaking skills of receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have been key components of Miami’s attack. This strategy has resulted in thrilling moments and remarkable offensive totals, but it has also been prone to irregularities. Slowing down the Dolphins’ attack has frequently been accomplished by defenses that can effectively pressure Tagovailoa or restrict his options downfield.

Head coach Mike McDaniel and his staff have stressed the significance of developing a reliable running game in light of this weakness.  Several significant advantages can be obtained via a powerful ground attack:

  • Control the clock: Sustained drives built around the run game can keep opposing offenses off the field and help the Dolphins dictate the pace of the game.
  • Open up the passing game: A credible rushing threat forces defenses to respect the run, creating opportunities for play-action passes and opening up space for receivers downfield.
  • Reduce pressure on Tagovailoa: A balanced offensive approach can take some of the burden off Tagovailoa’s shoulders, allowing him to operate more efficiently and effectively.

The Dolphins have the players necessary to implement this plan.  Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. are running backs who contribute speed, strength, and experience to the backfield.  Because of his lightning-fast pace, Mostert may break long runs at any time. Wilson Jr., a more robust runner, is a great addition and is particularly good at getting hard-to-get yards in between tackles.

A key element of any effective rushing game, the offensive line has improved following some early-season setbacks.  Terron Armstead, a veteran left tackle, and Liam Eichenberg, a rookie guard, have strengthened the unit by giving Tagovailoa better protection and creating more space for Mostert and Wilson Jr. to run.

The Dolphins’ recent victory over the New England Patriots demonstrated their dedication to the run.  Miami successfully managed the clock and kept the Patriots offense off the field by rushing for more than 100 yards during the game.  The Dolphins’ ground game potential and how it affects their overall offensive success were demonstrated by this performance.

If the Dolphins want to succeed in the future, they will have to keep emphasizing the run. They will be harder to defend and have a better chance of going far in the playoffs if they have a well-rounded offensive approach with a strong passing and rushing combination. The success of this strategy will depend on the continued development of the offensive line and the consistent production of Mostert and Wilson Jr. If these pieces fall into place, the Dolphins’ ground game could become the foundation of a championship-caliber offense.
